They are small, often family-run, frequently booked a season ahead, and they take new clients the way they always have — through someone who vouches for you. No English site, no quote form, no reply to a cold email in either language.
So the makers a search turns up are the ones set up to be found, not the ones you saw and wanted. Reaching the others is a matter of introduction, and of arriving with a brief they can actually work from.
(02) Method
Most foreign production projects stall on the same thing: a brief written for a designer, handed to a workshop. We translate intent into drawings, tolerances and vocabulary a Japanese maker recognises — then stay on it until it ships.

Not the words — the drawings, tolerances and vocabulary. Most production problems here started as a brief the workshop could not read.
Japanese making has a wide top end and the price follows it. We tell you which level your project actually needs, which is often not the highest.
Ateliers, factories, material vendors and finishers we have visited, project by project. Introductions carry weight here; directories do not.
Samples reviewed, quality checked and production seen on site. A photograph does not tell you what a finish feels like.
